Postpartum Care

Midwifery care doesn't stop when the baby arrives! From the immediate postpartum for a full six weeks, we continue to support clients as they adapt to life with a new family member.

Home Visit

The first postpartum visit is offered in the client's home, 1-2 days after the birth. At this visit, we perform the state-mandated newborn metabolic screening, as well as the critical congenital heart defect screening (CCHD). Additionally, we will assess baby's weight, breastfeeding, and mother's recovery.

Routine Postpartum Visits

We offer 2 week and 6 week follow-up visits at our office. These visits are check-ins for both mother and baby, following up on weight gain for baby, breastfeeding, and healing for mother. We offer the newborn hearing screen at these visits, as well.

Immediate Postpartum

Once a baby is born, the birth team monitors both mother and baby closely. We stay with the family for 2-3 hours minimum and longer as needed. During this time, we facilitate bonding and breastfeeding. We assist in placental delivery; inspect and repair any lacerations, as needed; and ensure mother and baby are adjusting normally. We tidy up the birth space, complete birth certificate forms, and do a thorough newborn exam. Once we or the parents leave, we remain available for questions and concerns 24/7.
